Protection and Instrumentation Engineer
Job Description/Key Resonsibilities
The opportunity awaits qualified results oriented professionals who are interested in joining our team within the Specialized Equipment Substation and Maintenance Department – Sophia, Georgetown. Interested candidates with the requisite qualifications and experience are invited to apply for the vacant position of Protection & Instrumentation Engineer.
Under the general direction of the Specialized Equipment Substation and Maintenance Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the management of the Protection & Instrumentation Section along with the executing the duties of the Protection & Instrumentation Engineer.
KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:
- Responsible for all technical development and revisions of laboratory and field test methods of importance to the utility.
- Prepare all reports on work conducted in the field or Test Laboratory.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Protection and Instrumentation workshop as indicated by Detailed Authorization/Instruction.
- Advise staff on all aspects of testing and repair of Electro-mechanical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic and thermal relays and their associated systems.
- Retrieval and archiving of relay and recloser data
- Review, based on load variation assessments, of the protection settings and coordination for secondary and primary distribution, transmission systems, as well as system unit protection reviews.
- Use of software for performing coordination and other related studies.
- Must be able to develop and validate protection settings for protection/network devices.
- Prepare detailed equipment, materials’ funding request and travel requirements for jobs as they are allocated and obtain approval of same when indicated.
- Prepare Annual Budgets, Planned Maintenance Charts and other Commissioning and Re-commissioning Schedules, Monthly Reports, Progress Reports etc.
- Respond within reasonable time to system emergencies and /or requests.
- Ensure that systems of accountability of inventories and assets are adhered to in accordance with accounting procedures.
- Ensure that departmental ‘Joint Occupational Safety and Health Committees’ meetings are convened monthly.
- Prepare and monitor the Department’s Annual Budget.
- Conduct Performance Appraisals of subordinate staff, assess and determine training needs and make recommendations.
- Orient, mentor and coach subordinate staff to aid their development of the requisite job skills.
- Prepare Examinations for Training Department, which would determine the promotion of Electrical Journeyman / Technician in the Section
- Prepare and submit monthly Section’s report by the fourth (4th) day of the preceding month.
- Performs any other duties that may be assigned to you within the scope of your employment by a duly authorized officer.

Required Qualifications and Experience
JOB SPECIFICATION/QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering/Project Management or its equivalent from an accredited institution with at least five (5) years relevant experience.
OR
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering or its equivalent from an accredited institution, City and Guilds, HNC or Higher Technical Diploma with eight (8) years relevant experience.
OR
- Ordinary Technical Diploma (G.T.I) or its equivalent from an accredited institution with at least twelve (12) years relevant experience.
- Alternatively: Fifteen (15) years’ experience in the relevant field
SALARY SCALE: Junior Management “B”
