SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Network Communication Engineer, the incumbent will be responsible for supporting GPL’s generation, transmission, and distribution operations by performing installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of network communications and fiber-optic infrastructure used for SCADA, protection, and automation systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:
1. Install, configure, and maintain communication equipment (switches, routers, radios, media converters).
2. Perform fiber-optic installation, termination, testing, and fault restoration.
3. Support SCADA, RTU, IED, and protection relay communications.
4. Troubleshoot communication failures and assist in system recovery.
5. Maintain tools, test equipment, and calibration records.
6. Adhere strictly to OHS and cybersecurity requirements.
7. Maintain documentation, logs, and reports.
8. Participate in training and system upgrades.
9. Support the company’s safety programs by following the OHS procedure within the section.
10. Perform other duties that may be assigned to you within the scope of your employment, from an Authorized Officer.
COMPETENCY PROFILE:
· Knowledge of power system operation, including generation, transmission and distribution
· Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access as well as other data management and analysis software and tools
· Good Knowledge of Fiber Optic Communications and Local Area Networks
· Familiar with communication protocols.
· Familiar with IEDs, protection relays and RTUs communications and specifications
· Demonstrated positive learning attitude
· Be conversant with relevant law, and regulations of Guyana and GPL policies and rules
· Demonstrated commitment to the environment, health and safety
· Conversant with GPL Performance Management System (PMS)
Required Qualifications and Experience
Diploma in Electrical/Mechanical/ Engineering or Communication/Information Technology from the University of Guyana or its equivalent from an accredited institution plus three (3) years relevant experience.
OR
Technician Diploma in Electrical/Mechanical/ Engineering or Computer Science from the Government Technical Institute or its equivalent from an accredited institution plus Five (5) years relevant experience.
