SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Senior Automation Engineer, the incumbent will support Guyana Power & Light Inc. (GPL) system’s operations by providing engineering and technical support for the Communication Systems deployed to monitor and control the generation, transmission, and distribution systems. Responsible for the configuration, testing, analysis, maintenance and operation of all the communication-related equipment.

This role requires an individual with an interest in Network Communications and the ability to be an active team player in the section. The role is expected to be both office and field based. The individual will be expected to undertake training that will be provided to aid in the development of specialized skills that are critical for the automation section.

 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

 

 

  1. Administration of the activities related to system maintenance, configuration and installation of all communications related equipment.
  2. Monitor, troubleshoot and resolve issues relating to database, displays, and all interfaces of the communications system at the Local and Main Control Centre.
  3. Perform repair and recover activities from hardware or software failures related to the Network Communication equipment. Coordinate and communicate with impacted users.
  4. Provide engineering and technical support to the Network Communication Technicians and Operators on any issue relating to the various Network Communications equipment.
  5. Configure new and maintain existing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) communications monitoring points (analogs, indications, accumulator, controls and set points).
  6. Configure communications alarms for off-normal and events (limits, normal states) and add new points to monitor and control the main SCADA.
  7. Responsible for coordinating and planning any necessary upgrades to the Communication System.
  8. Develop and maintain all appropriate documentation and operating procedures for all communication-related application functions.
  9. Support the company’s safety programs by following the Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) procedure within the section.
  10. Provide training to the Network Communications Technicians and Operators on the workings of the Communication System and also corresponding infrastructure.
  11. Coordinate and ensure that all fiber optic maintenances are done in accordance with standard engineering practices.
  12. Ensure that GPL’s Local Area Network is in compliance with the Information Technology (IT) Department approved cyber security measures.
  13. Ensure that all Network Communications tools used by the technicians are properly calibrated and operating according to specifications.
  14. Perform any other duties as directed by the Senior Automation Engineer or the System Control and Operations Manager.

COMPETENCY PROFILE:

 

  • Knowledge of power system operation, including generation, transmission and distribution
  • Ability to produce high-quality reports and analysis with attention to detail
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access as well as other data management and analysis software and tools
  • Good Knowledge of Fiber Optic Communications and Local Area Networks
  • Familiar with the various communication protocols
  • Familiar with IEDs, protection relays and RTUs communications and specifications
  • Familiar with cyber security laws and regulations
  • Demonstrated positive learning attitude
  • Be conversant with relevant law, and regulations of Guyana and GPL policies and rules
  • Demonstrated commitment to the environment, health and safety
  • Conversant with GPL Performance Management System (PMS)

Required Qualifications and Experience

  1. Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering from the University of Guyana or its equivalent from an accredited institution with a minimum of Three (3) years’ experience. Engineering experience is an asset.

 

 

 

Salary Grade: Commensurate with Junior Management “B” Emoluments
