Job Description/Key Resonsibilities

The Guyana Power & Light Inc. invites applications from interested candidates with the requisite qualifications and experience to fill the vacant position of Network Administrator – Information Technology Division – Sophia.

Under the direction of the, Manager – IT, the incumbent will be responsible for planning, managing and improving the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) Wide Area Network (WAN),  to deliver swift, secure, reliable and resilient business services to IT Division’s customers, i.e. GPL staff and other defined users.

Key Responsibility Areas 

  1. Develop data-driven plans, and communicate those plans, for the Wide Area Network (WAN) and related services including cloud computing/ storage to achieve outcomes identified in Divisional and Company Strategic Plans.
  2. Plan, monitor and adapt network architecture in a strategic manner to deliver the user experience and security desired by the company – secure the WAN from cyber threats, including intrusion and data theft.
  3. Design, install/ configure, monitor, analyse, troubleshoot, administer, maintain and secure the WAN, and prepare for disaster response.
  4. Prepare budget proposals for implementation of plans and maintenance of the WAN
  5. Plan purchases, with consideration of outcomes, and ensure sufficient inventory of network equipment/ appliances (e.g. Firewalls, Routers, Switches, Wireless PTP and APs), and accessories (e.g. CAT5/6 cables, RJ connectors, patch cables SFP modules, etc.).
  6. Ensure that documentation pertinent to the company’s WAN is prepared and updated, and related timely working guidance is routinely provided to appropriate Divisional staff.
  7. Provide technical support to business units on network related issues.
  8. Implement a system of holding credentials for important WAN infrastructure and external services in escrow.
  9. Ensure that systems of monitoring and securing the Wide Area Network (WAN) are implemented and fully used, including devices and software e.g. Firewalls, PRTG, Wazuh SIEM and Antivirus.
  10. Implement and proactively report on outcomes of planned actions
  11. Implement and manage a verifiable system of least-privilege access management for staff and contractors, with prompt access-removal and reporting following movement of staff, resignation of staff, conclusion of contract, etc.
  12. Monitor and report on usage of parts of the Wide Area Network (WAN), and improve network performance by analyzing routing, throughput and collisions, etc..
  13. Implement a high level of customer service to GPL and other defined users, aided by thorough asset management.
  14. Implement and use a system of promptly communicating with customers, via fallback/ redundant channels, to provide warnings, current advisories and situation updates when warranted by changes in the status or performance of the computing infrastructure.
  15. Implement or assist with the implementation of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) best practices for IT Service Management, and CIS Controls and Benchmarks for cybersecurity.
  16. Research and recommend innovative, cost-effective, and where possible automated approaches for managing and securing GPL’s WAN and delivering services.
  17. Undertake and support change management initiatives to effect a view of staff/ other departments as customers, with departmental work viewed as customer service
  18. Perform other duties that may be assigned to you within the scope of your employment, from an Authorized Officer. 

COMPETENCY PROFILE:

  • Knowledge of computer network troubleshooting and problem analysis and resolution skills
  • Knowledge of DHCP, DNS and other protocol and standards
  • Understanding of IT Security
  • Familiarity with LAN, WAN and Net Devices
  • Written and Verbal Communication
  • Ability to work independently, with minimum supervision

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) Enterprise Infrastructure with infrastructure design, routing and switching or its equivalent with at least five (5) years’ relevant experience.

OR

Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Enterprise with infrastructure design, routing and switching or its equivalent with at least (8) eight years’ relevant experience.

Degree in Computer Science from the University of Guyana or a related discipline would be an asset. Certification/ demonstrable portfolio of experience in related information technology/ computer science areas e.g. Linux Administration, Cloud or Cybersecurity, would be an asset with at least (8) eight years’ relevant experience
