AUTOMATION ENGINEER
Job Description/Key Resonsibilities
1. Administration of the activities related to system security, backup and crash recovery of the
automation system applications.
2. Manage, deploy, install, configure, and monitor the components of the automation system on an
on-going basis.
3. Monitor, troubleshoot and resolve issues relating to database, displays, and all interfaces of the
system at the Local and Main Control Center.
4. Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with
impacted users.
5. Provide engineering and technical support to the Automation Technicians and Operators on any
issue relating to the various automation applications.
6. Analysis of daily operation results and preparation of reports on energy generation, load demand
and interruptions to customers.
7. Calculation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, annual and multi-year Key Performance
Indicators (KPIs) for each generator, transmission line and distribution feeder.
8. Oversee the design and development of suitable databases, data collection system, data analytics
and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality.
9. Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are
successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and
media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
10. Configure new and maintain existing SCADA monitoring points (analogs, indications,
accumulator, controls and set points) and test new substations in the SCADA.
11. Configure alarms for off-normal and events (limits, normal states) and add new points to monitor
and control the main SCADA.
12. Ensure the power system application software such as state estimator, load flow and contingency
analysis is operational and tuned.
13. Responsible for coordinating and planning any necessary upgrades to the Automation System.
14. Develop and maintain all appropriate documentation and operating procedures for all
automation-related application functions.
15. Support the company’s safety programs by following the OHS procedure within the section.
16. Provide training to Automation Technicians and Operators on the workings of the various
automation applications.
17. Calculate all Operations KPIs and compile GPL’s Operations report.
18. Compile data and provide a detailed analysis for system shutdowns and disturbances.
19. Perform any other duties as directed by the Senior Automation Engineer or the System Control
and Operations Manager.
COMPETENCY PROFILE:
Good knowledge of power system operation, including generation, transmission and
distribution.
Ability to produce high-quality reports and analysis with attention to detail
Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and
Access as well as other data management and analysis software and tools
Experience in compiling and analyzing data collected from various sources
Ability to work and communicate effectively in a team environment
Excellent skills in technical report writing and presentation
Familiar with GPL Corporate Strategic Plan and Operations Divisional Business Plan
Familiar with operation report procedures for generation, transmission and distribution
Good knowledge in calculation of divisional key performance indicators Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis
Demonstrated positive learning attitude
Be conversant with relevant law, and regulations of Guyana and GPL policies and rules
Demonstrated commitment to the environment, health and safety
Conversant with GPL Performance Management System (PMS)
Required Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor of Science in Power or Electrical Engineering, or its equivalent from an accredited
institution with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience. Engineering experience is an asset.
