East Demerara and Berbice service interruption
Georgetown, Guyana: Friday, July 19, 2019: At approximately 13:39hrs on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, the circuit breakers connected to two 69 kV transmission lines linking Sophia and Garden-of-Eden Substations tripped due to a fault which caused customers in East Demerara and Berbice to experience an interruption in electricity supply.
The unavailability of the transmission lines resulted in the loss of approximately 25 Megawatt, which accounted for 20 percent of the power generated within the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System at the time.
Remedial work to isolate and correct the fault commenced immediately thereafter and at approximately 14:06hrs incremental power restoration commenced. All areas were repowered at approximately 15:00hrs.
