Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System(DBIS) service interruptions

Georgetown, Guyana: April 26, 2019: At approximately 13:35 hrs on Thursday, April 25, the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) experienced a shutdown due to a fault on a circuit breaker at the Garden of Eden Power Plant which caused a “lock out” of the busbar facilitating transfer of power from 4 generators.  The sudden loss of 18 MW of generator capacity resulted in the shutdown.

Remedial efforts began immediately with the first area being repowered at 13:56 hrs. At approximately 15:00 hrs all areas were repowered following replacement of the defective breaker.

Additionally, prior to the DBIS shutdown, sections of the Georgetown, East Coast and East Bank Demerara experienced periods of service interruptions due to localized area faults caused by the inclement weather.

GPL offers sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused.
