MEDIA RELEASE

Demerara Berbice Interconnected System Shutdown

Georgetown, Guyana: May 28, 2019: At approximately 8:35 hrs on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) experienced a shutdown due an abrupt and aggregated loss of 16.5 megawatts of generation capacity at our Kingston and Vreed-en-Hoop Power Plants.

At Vreed-en-Hoop, the engine safety module (ESM), which provides monitoring protection for the engines, was activated and shutdown the No. 2 engine due to a defective speed sensor, which resulted in a loss of 8.7MWs. While at Kingston, a drop in frequency resulted in the loss of 7.8MWs.

Remedial system restoration commenced within minutes of the shutdown which resulted in power restoration in both Counties. In Demerara, power restoration began around 08:35hrs, with full restoration at 11:16 hrs. All customers within Berbice were repowered at 8:38hrs with the exception of customers from Cumberland to Auchlyne. The latter areas were repowered at 11:19hrs.

Our Company remains fully cognizant of the inconvenience caused by these outages and offers sincerest apologies.
