Project Description

Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) is implementing the Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Program (GUYSOL) as part of its commitment to a sustainable energy future.

The GUYSOL initiative, funded by the Guyana/Norway partnership with an estimated investment of US$83.3 million, aims to diversify Guyana’s energy mix. In 2024, the Program is set to install 18 MWp of solar PV farms and battery storage systems in regions 2, 5, and 6. Additionally, procurement for an extra 15 MWp of solar PV is scheduled for later in the same year.

The Program is administered by the Inter-American Development Bank ( IDB), and aligns with Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy. The initiative emphasizes climate-resilient renewable energy resources in electricity generation.

GUYSOL’s five (5) solar farm locations

Onderneeming, Region 2

Charity, Region 2

  • A total of 8MWp of Solar PV.
  • A minimum of 8MWh of Battery Storage for the Essequibo Coast isolated system.
  • Installation of automated monitoring and controls system and remote-control systems for the Essequibo Coast Isolated system

Trafalgar, Region 5

Prospect, Region 6

Hampshire, Region 6

  • A total of 10MWp of Solar PV in Berbice for the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System.

Social and Developmental Initiatives

Training of 50 women in solar PV, including solar job and workforce development with a paid 8-month apprenticeship opportunity.

Implementation of (2) Energy Apprenticeship programs to provide ‘hands-on experience’ to 20 Guyanese men and women inclusive of persons with disabilities in areas related to energy management, financial, procurement, and environmental/social safeguards.

GUYSOL’s Goals

Reduce generation cost and simultaneously add generating capacity to GPL via a renewable source of energy.

Avoid CO2 emissions by displacing the use of fossil fuel from electricity production.

Increase reliability in the service to customers.

Empower Guyanese to become more participative in the renewables industry in Guyana.
