Georgetown, Guyana — Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) and Unified Gas, Inc., doing business as UniGas, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday in GPL’s Boardroom, establishing a framework to explore the potential use of natural gas to enhance the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of electricity generation.
The MoU represents another step in GPL’s ongoing efforts to examine practical and technically sound solutions that can improve generation efficiency, strengthen energy security and support the delivery of reliable electricity to customers.
Under the framework, UniGas will advance an engineering, technical and financial feasibility assessment to determine the viability of converting selected GPL-owned heavy fuel oil (HFO) generating assets to operate on a dual-fuel basis using natural gas.
The assessment will examine several critical areas, including engine conversion requirements, natural gas supply and demand, site and piping infrastructure, compressed natural gas unloading facilities, pressure reduction and metering systems, operational controls, safety requirements and implementation timelines.
A key area of evaluation will be the potential to significantly reduce the consumption of heavy fuel oil at selected generating facilities through dual-fuel technology while maintaining the reliability, flexibility and security of GPL’s generation operations.
The collaboration underscores GPL’s commitment to responsible planning and the continued evaluation of technologies and fuel options that can contribute to a more efficient and sustainable electricity sector.
Importantly, the MoU represents an early-stage evaluation framework and provides an opportunity for GPL and UniGas to thoroughly assess the technical, operational and commercial merits of the proposed initiative.
Any advancement beyond the feasibility stage will be guided by the results of the technical and financial assessments, confirmation of a reliable natural gas supply, safety and regulatory requirements, applicable procurement and governance processes, and the necessary governmental and regulatory approvals.
Through initiatives such as this, GPL continues to examine opportunities that can reduce dependence on traditional fuels, enhance operational flexibility and strengthen Guyana’s energy security while supporting the country’s transition towards cleaner and more efficient electricity production.
